NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa. –
Army 1st Sgt. Laquita Bryant assumed the role of senior enlisted advisor at Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, from Army 1st Sgt. Rayon Cunningham during a change of responsibility ceremony Aug. 3.
The ceremony, held at the Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna, was hosted by Army Col. Christopher Urynowicz, commander, DLA Distribution Susquehanna. The event highlighted the critical leadership role of the first sergeant and celebrated Cunningham's extensive career as he prepares for retirement.
"I'm grateful for the support and guidance 1st Sgt. Cunningham provided to me during my short time in command," Urynowicz said. "And I'm confident that 1st Sgt. Bryant will continue with his legacy of excellence."
Serving as the primary mentor and keeper of standards, the first sergeant is a senior noncommissioned officer responsible for the health, welfare, morale, training and discipline of their fellow soldiers. They work directly alongside the commander, managing administrative and personnel burdens so the commander can focus on mission execution and tactics.
Cunningham, who is approaching retirement after 26 years of Army service, reflected on his time at DLA Distribution Susquehanna and shared his personal philosophy on leadership.
"Leadership is not about authorities. Leadership is about serving others, building trust, developing people and leaving an organization better than you found it," Cunningham said.
He also took time to directly address the civilian and military workforce, emphasizing the global impact of their logistics mission.
"Every item you receive, inspect, repair, package, store, ship has a potential to save a soldier, sailor, airman, marine, guardian or coast guardsman," Cunningham said. "They may never know your name, but they benefit from your professionalism every single day. Success is not measured by rank, title, award or position. Success is measured by the lives we touch, the people we develop and the legacy we leave behind."
Bryant, stepping into the role as the new senior enlisted advisor, expressed her gratitude and readiness to lead the organization forward.
"Colonel Urynowicz, thank you for your confidence and for entrusting me with this responsibility," Bryant said. "It's truly an honor to join this family."
Acknowledging the heavy civilian presence that keeps DLA Distribution Susquehanna running, alongside the soldiers and service members in the organization, Bryant emphasized a collaborative approach to her new leadership role.
"I look forward to learning from you and earning your trust," Bryant told the workforce, before thanking her predecessor. "I want to thank 1st Sgt. Cunningham for his leadership and for the foundation he built."
