PHILADELPHIA –
Employees at the Defense Logistics Agency Philadelphia surpassed their goal for food donations in support of the ninth annual Feds Feed Families campaign this year.
The workforce donated 3,305 pounds of food, exceeding the goal of 3,000 pounds. The food was delivered to Philabundance, a non-profit organization providing hunger relief to local counties in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
“Our goal is to help do our part in the fight against hunger,” said Janeen Hayes, DLA Philadelphia’s Feds Feed Families project officer and DLA Troop Support Corporate Communications chief. “Feds Feed Families is a great opportunity for federal employees to give back to the local communities.”
DLA Philadelphia donated nearly 1,000 pounds more than last year.
“We pride ourselves on being able to support local communities and those in need,” Hayes said. “We challenged ourselves to donate more than the year before, and our employees stepped up to help reach those goals.”
DLA Philadelphia donated the second-largest amount of food among the nearly 20 federal agencies in the Philadelphia community, according to Elizabeth Sanon, Philabundance food acquisition coordinator. Altogether, the food bank has received more than 15,000 pounds in donations from the local agencies.
“We are thrilled to be the beneficiaries of the local Feds Feed Families campaign,” Sanon said. “Each year, the total donations continue to grow as more and more people rally together to fight hunger. We could not have such an impact on our community without our supporters, and especially the federal agencies in our area.”
The U.S. Department of Agriculture-led campaign operates every June through August. Feds Feed Families was created to help food banks and pantries stay stocked during summer months when they traditionally see a decrease in donations and an increase in need, according to the USDA.
Federal agencies donated more than 10.4 million pounds of food in support of Feds Feeds Families in 2017. The annual food drive has collected nearly 80 million pounds of food since the campaign began in 2009.
