DLA Land and Maritime Public Affairs

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Defense Supply Center Columbus surpassed its centennial milestone of providing support to servicemen and women around the world May 4. The installation commemorated the day with a ceremony and historic presentation at the installation’s operations center celebrating 100 years of logistics and Warfighter support.

“Throughout our century of commitment, this installation’s workforce has contributed significantly to every military and humanitarian event in support of our national security,” said Navy Rear Adm. Michelle Skubic, commander of DSCC and the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime. “DSCC has validated its critical and strategic importance to our national security…The real testament to that is not only that we’re still here celebrating a 100th anniversary but that we’ve modernized and expanded our capabilities to shoulder an evolved Warfighting support mission – a mission that now reaches globally to support our men and women serving our nation’s defense in locations throughout the world.”

Keynote speaker Army Brig. Gen. Steve Stivers, director of the Ohio National Guard Joint Staff, spoke on the national security impact of DSCC’s tenants and the base’s economic contributions to Central Ohio.

“Anywhere there’s a Soldier, there are DLA materials helping that service member keep their weapon systems up and running,” said Stivers, of DSCC’s largest tenant.

Following the ceremony, attendees were invited to view historical displays.

The installation’s former officer’s club – now refashioned into a social gathering place called The Bunker – featured historical documents including original architectural plans and a time capsule. Mott’s Military Museum provided several military vehicles and artifacts dating from World War II to Vietnam.

The installation, initially carved out of about 280 acres of undeveloped swamps and farmland, grew to encompass over 520 acres to meet needs of military units spread across the globe. Today, the installation hosts 26 tenants and employs nearly 8,000 federal civilians, military service members and contractors.
