June 29, 2018 —
Each year many DLA employees and family members attend Fourth of July celebrations across this great country, as well as celebrations in overseas locations. While there are no credible or specific threats, staying aware of your surroundings can help you have a safe celebration.
The celebrations include the fireworks display on the Mall in Washington D.C.; events in Philadelphia, where our Declaration of Independence was written and ratified; fireworks in San Francisco; as well as many other locations near DLA personnel. Our country is home to many patriotic landmarks, whose historical value makes them a target to terrorists. Prominent Fourth of July celebrations around the country may also represent other possible targets.
Independence Day events generate significant media coverage and see a large number of attendees, which could make an attractive target for terrorists. The primary security concern is large crowds of people. Mass transit systems in major cities are also an attractive target to terrorists.
Be aware of suspicious activity on surrounding streets and throughout the transit system. Notify police if you see anything suspicious. The large number of people entering and traveling throughout the metro area during the holidays will strain the public transit system.
Immediately report suspicious activity to local law enforcement by calling 911 or your local emergency number. DLA employees who later recall activity they realize was suspicious can report it to the local DLA contact listed on the DLA iWATCH page (DLA Common Access Card required) or by clicking the “Reporting” tab at the top.
Remember, if you see something, say something. As always, a little prevention will go a long way toward helping make this holiday enjoyable and memorable.
Happy Fourth of July!
