World Diabetes Day Observed at DSCC

By Brenda Minnema DLA Land and Maritime People and Culture

Julie Palmer of Lifecare Alliance presented An Apple a Day: Nutrition Prescription to Prevent Diabetes seminar in the Buckeye Room Nov. 14.

The session focused on portion control, serving sizes, caloric intake and the creation of a healthy meal.

In the section on reading the label, Palmer explained how to understand the label and read between the lines.

“Did you know that many foods that come as a single portion actually have multiple servings?” Palmer said. “For example, a 20 ounce soda has 2.5 servings. If you consume the entire bottle, you must multiply every number on that label by 2.5 to see what your intake is for that soda. The more calories consumed can lead to weight gain and harmful spikes in your blood sugar.”

Palmer provided helpful handouts that showed how to use your hand as a tool in measuring fruits, vegetables, proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. These guides gave suggestions on what to put on your plate when meal planning.
