National American Indian Heritage Month celebrates the original inhabitants, explores and settlers of the United States. The month also recognizes the achievements, continuing contributions and service to this country (per capita, American Indians serve in the military more than any other ethnic group). This year’s theme is, “Sovereignty, Trust and Resilience.”

Today, there are 567 federally recognized American Indian and Alaska Native tribes and more than 100 state-recognized tribes across the United States. Each have their own distinctive history, beliefs, governance structure and culture.
