NEW CUMBERLAND, Pa., May 9, 2019 —
More than 100 participated in the 2019 Morale, Welfare and Recreation sponsored children’s trout derby held Saturday, May 4, at the Children’s Trout Pond located off perimeter road at Defense Distribution Center Susquehanna.
Children, ages 6-12 years, and their families were invited to come out and fish a well-stocked pond at this free annual event. The participants kept what they caught. The event featured fishing, giveaways, and free snacks for the patrons to enjoy. Children received a complimentary gift for attending and there were other opportunities for them to win larger prizes.
“MWR has been helping run this for about six years but I think it has been running for about 15 years now,” said Rob Leasure, MWR recreation assistant. “We have had 88 kids and 89 adults register this year and this is the first time in the past six years that the biggest trout was caught on the first day. It was just over 22 inches.”
Prize drawings for fishing gear were a highlight of the event with the children invited to draw the winners.
“I have been bringing my grandson for about three years but I use to volunteer to support this event before I ever started bringing him,” said Richard McClung an employee of DLA Distribution Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. “This is a great event for the kids and since they don’t get all the fish the first day, I can get a pass and we can come back and fish some more.”
Some of those in attendance also came from Mechanicsburg Naval Support Activity.
“We have been coming here for about four years,” said Eva Wells who works at Armed Forces Exchange Services Mechanicsburg. “My husband Leroy and I have our two grandkids here today.”
