COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Each May we celebrate and honor the contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made and the part they have played in the history of this country. The month of May was selected to coincide and commemorate two important milestones in AAPI history: the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants in the United States and contributions of Chinese workers to the building of the transcontinental railroad.
According to recent U.S. Census data, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders were one of the fastest growing race groups in the United States from 2000-2019. They currently account for over 24.5 million Americans. Like America itself, the Asian American and Pacific Islander community draws strength from the diversity of its many distinct cultures. Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have forged a proud legacy of building, defending, and strengthening our nation.
It has been a difficult year for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community but throughout these difficulties they continue to persevere and contribute to society. Many Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders serve in our military and as frontline essential workers, providing vital services during this critical time. They put “service” above “self.”
This year’s theme is “Advancing Leaders Through Purpose-Driven Service.” The theme pays homage to the Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians who serve as inspiring examples of leaders, trailblazers and patriots united by a common hope for civil rights, equal treatment and a better tomorrow for all Americans. It’s this purpose and passion that drives Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to being powerful voices in their communities.
We encourage all Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime associates to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by learning more about their contributions.
