Get physical May 16 at newly opened Red Brick Fitness Center

By Natalie Skelton, DLA Aviation Public Affairs

The newly rebuilt fitness center on Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia is back, bigger and better and ready to help you reach your fitness goals starting May 16.

The Red Brick Fitness Center will also celebrate a Grand Opening May 19 at 3 p.m. It is the culmination of a project that began with the planned demolition of building 33 that housed the fitness center previously.

“The old fitness center [which was in Building 33] was demolished as part of the military construction plans to build the Defense Logistics Agency Aviation Operations Center Phase 2,” said Ursula Hickox, chief of Morale, Welfare and Recreation for DLA Installation Management Richmond.

The location of the new fitness center at Building 32, F and G bays, was chosen and completed as a separate project. Hickox said the design process relied on Defense Department guidance for fitness facility construction, and the size is commensurate with the number of people assigned to the installation.

The center is open to active-duty, reserve and National Guard military members, DOD civilian employees, Coast Guard civilians, retirees and dependents of the aforementioned categories, and contract personnel who work full time on Defense Supply Center Richmond. Patrons must show their Common Access Card, identification card or, for current and retired Army civilian employees and family members, DA Form 1602.

“Although we don’t have a designated number with an official maximum capacity just yet, we can say this fitness center, at 40,000 square feet, can accommodate more people than our space at the “Barn”/Community Center and our previous facility in Building 33.” Hickox said.

The interim fitness center at the “Barn” [in the Community Center] was closed April 29 in preparation of the new facility.

The expanded facility houses a weight and cardio room, racquetball court, basketball court, personal training room, and dedicated spin [now known as the Multi-Purpose Room] and aerobics rooms. The male and female locker rooms are larger, with more daily and long-term lockers as well as a steam room and sauna in each.

Hickox said the new center’s accommodations were planned in part based on patron feedback and requests, such as including a steam room and sauna in both locker rooms, more restrooms, ceiling fans for increased air circulation, and the relocation of the Wellness Center to the fitness center property.

The center will follow any COVID-19 restrictions in place, which Hickox said could vary depending on the community level and health protection conditions.

“We will announce any operational updates as those change, and as we get further DOD/DLA guidance,” she said.

The Red Brick Fitness Center operation times begin May 16 from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday.  It will close at 1:00 p.m. on May 19 to facilitate a grand opening ribbon cutting event scheduled for 3:00 p.m. that same day.  For more information on the facility, contact Jermaine Edwards, supervisory sports specialist, at 804-366-1172 or jermaine.edwards@dla.mil.
