DSCC to hold active shooter response training

By Michael Molinaro DLA Land and Maritime Public Affairs

Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC) Security and Emergency Services will host training to keep the workforce better informed on what to expect and how to react during an active shooter situation.  The training, to be held Jan. 14 inside the Building 20 auditorium, is in accordance with the F.B.I. recommended ALERRT (Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training) program from the Texas State University.

The guest speaker will be Sgt. Chad Huntzinger with the Whitehall Police Department SWAT Team. Huntzinger is an 18-year veteran with the Whitehall Police Department and has recently completed the ALERRT training.  The ALERRT curriculum is dynamic force-on-force, scenario-based training. It has been adopted by the FBI as the national training standard for active shooter response, and has been provided to more than 40,000 police officers nationwide.

“As commander of this installation, it is my number one priority to ensure the safety of everyone onboard,” Rear Adm. John King said. “Although there is very little chance of an active shooter event occurring, I take my responsibility very seriously to ensure that all associates receive training and understand what they can do to remain safe in the rare chance an incident like this occurs.”

The purpose of this seminar is to give instruction about how to prepare for and respond to being trapped inside an active shooter event. On average it will take law enforcement at least three minutes from the time they are notified before officers first arrive on scene. Although American law enforcement has the quickest response time in the world, a gunman can still wreak havoc on many innocent people before help arrives. There are several simple steps that those trapped inside by the gunman can take to assist before the inevitable law enforcement response and limit the number of potential victims accessible to the shooter.

“The Defense Supply Center First Responders continually train for these situations, but it's imperative that we all know what to do, where to go, and the procedures that must be taken should an event occur.  To help you verify your personal plan, we look for opportunities to bring in trained professionals and inculcate an awareness for even these very unlikely scenarios.  I hope everyone attends on the 14th of January and actively participates in this worthwhile training provided by our civic partners from the Whitehall Police Department."

The session starts promptly at 1 p.m.
