In 1918, the U.S. Army established the installation known today as the Defense Supply Center Columbus to support the heavy demands of World War I. Originally opened as the Columbus Quartermaster Reserve Depot, the center underwent many name changes as its mission and scope fluctuated with the nation’s needs. Today, many longtime employees still refer to the installation as “the depot.”

In 1963, the center’s operational activities were merged to form the Defense Construction Supply Center under what is known today as the Defense Logistics Agency. The Central Ohio facility would retain this name for 3 decades under DLA.

An aerial view of the warehouse and storage buildings at the Defense Construction Supply Center. The facility opened in 1918 and was known for many years as the Columbus General Reserve Depot. In the early 1960s, it became the Defense Construction Supply Center under what is known today as the Defense Logistics Agency. After the 1993 Base Realignment and Closure Commissions consolidated a Dayton facility with the Columbus base, the center began 1996 under the name the Defense Supply Center Columbus.
