Driving Warfighter Support

By DLA Energy Public Affairs

As part of his immersion as the Defense Logistics Agency Energy Commander, Air Force Brig. Gen. Albert Miller visited Joint Base Langley-Eustis Fuels Management Flight Jan. 23.

The fuels management flight, also known as POL for petroleum, oils and lubricants, provides fuel support to the Air Combat Command, Fort Eustis’ Training Doctrine, six battalions, five wings and 30 organizations across JBLE.

DLA Energy’s Americas at Houston Commander Army Lt. Col. Josiel Carrasquillo accompanied the commander to explain how the fuel supply chains are brought together.

“JB Langley-Eustis is one of 646 partner fuel accounts within DLA Energy Americas at Houston,” Carrasquillo said. “The DLA Energy region works closely with sites to coordinate delivery of approximately 1.1 billion gallons of refined petroleum product annually.”

About 70 POL airmen supply more than 9.5 million gallons of fuel to approximately 60 aircraft, all government operated vehicles, generators and GOV refueling stations around base.

“It was obvious from our visit that Langley’s fuels professionals understand the importance of supply chain management,” Miller said. “It makes me proud to know DLA Energy support, from refinery to the skin of the aircraft, is enabling a mission as important as this one.”

The visit began with an overview of the JBLE mission, home to 40 F-22 Raptor aircraft and other military airframes. The team then toured fuels operations, infrastructure, equipment and the recently-constructed fuel pier where DLA Energy’s bulk distribution interfaces with retail supply.

“It was a fantastic experience to host Brigadier General Miller,” said Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Justin Oakley, Langley’s fuels management flight superintendent. “The visit allowed us as a Defense Fuel Support Point to highlight the base-level requirements and how we achieve DLA Energy’s expectations. We showcased airmen and developed their perspective on how DLA Energy’s support connects to the flying mission and Warfighter support.”
