DLA Director visits Land and Maritime, reviews logistics operations plan

Defense Logistics Agency Director Army Lt. Gen. Darrell Williams and select members of his senior staff visited Defense Supply Center Columbus Dec. 11 to review DLA Land and Maritime’s present and future logistics operation plans. The visit was hosted by DLA Land and Maritime Commander Navy Rear Adm. John Palmer and his senior leadership team.

Associates, teams honored during DLA 51st Annual Employee Recognition Awards

The Defense Logistics Agency announced the winners of the DLA 51st Annual Employee Recognition Awards Program Dec. 13 in the auditorium of the Andrew T. McNamara Complex at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Columbus secured top honors in seven categories, recognizing six associates and two teams for their outstanding contributions. Veterans serving veterans, giving thanks across military generations

Many Americans gathered with family and friends to give thanks last week; however, members of the DLA Land and Maritime family met with another family to give thanks this season – veterans. The 13-member group of active duty and retired service members led by the Joint Reserve Force supported the Columbus VA annual Thanksgiving feast for area veterans. The event was held at the American Legion Post 144 on South High Street Nov. 16.

Family service, loss themes of 2018 Marine Corps birthday celebration at DSCC

The Marine Corps celebrated 243 years of service to the nation during a birthday celebration at the Defense Supply Center Columbus Nov. 7. “The U.S. Marine Corps has a long, proud history of service defending America’s liberties and ideals dating back to the foundation of our country,” said Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime Deputy Commander Steve Alsup opening the program. “Through multiple conflicts, the valor and courage of the Corps has been battle-tested and proven.”

Fire Prevention Week: Look. Listen. Learn. Be Aware. Fire can happen anywhere.

Fire Prevention Week was Oct. 7 - 13. It was first established in 1922. In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge issued the first proclamation for fire prevention week, making it a national observance. DLA Columbus Fire and Emergency Services recognizes the importance of fire prevention and fire safety education. FES holds several specialized events each year during fire prevention week.

Engineers rally over Sailors to win Navy’s annual regatta

The Bullship went belly up and a fast-moving shark named Hat Trick prevailed at Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s 4th annual Navy Cardboard Regatta held Oct. 11 at DSCC. The race is held annually on the U.S. Navy’s birthday and showcases a range of watercraft created by Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen, Marines, veterans and civilians using nothing more than duct tape and cardboard. The race is open to all tenants and this year’s cardboard fleet featured a dozen teams from DLA Land and Maritime, the Navy Recruiting District Ohio and the DFAS– Columbus.

Puget Sound increases contracting awards nearly 50 percent, awarding small businesses millions

Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s Puget Sound detachment achieved a 43 percent increase in contracting actions this year. The contracting division executed more than $103 million in contract awards during fiscal year 2018 in support of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility, an increase of nearly 50 percent over FY17.

DSCC associate saves life on commute home

We’ve all heard the saying, “It’s all about being in the right place at the right time,” but these words couldn’t be truer for Daniel McCombs. It was dark outside and he was focused on ensuring the safety of the witnesses. This is when he noticed the car on flames and heard someone was still inside, he immediately went into response mode – trying to figure out how to save the driver.
