The National Stock Number

A National/NATO Stock Number (NSN) is simply an official label applied to an item that has been cataloged in the Federal Cataloging System (FCS) or NATO Codification System (NCS).

The NSN consists of 13-digit code, composed of 4-digit Federal/NATO Supply Classification (FSC/NSC), the 9-digit National/NATO Item identification Number (NIIN) is composed of a 2-digit NATO Code for the National Codification Bureau (NCB), plus a 7-digit non-significant number assigned by the individual NCB.

During the NSN assignment, a wide range of logistics data is assembled to define the Item of Supply. This information includes the Item Name, Manufacturer’s Reference Number, Unit Price, Characteristics, Shelf-Life and information associated with the Acquisition all the way to the Disposition of the Item of Supply.

Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) data is unrestricted information for each National Stock Number (NSN) in the Federal Catalog System (FCS). FLIS forms the foundation for all logistics information systems and is the catalog of more than sixteen million Supply Items used by the U.S. Government and international partners. Below are resources that can be Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) data.

Federal Logistics (FED LOG)

FED LOG provides users the ability to access and query FLIS data during instances when internet connectivity is not available. FED LOG provides essential information about items of supply to include the NSN, Approved Item Name, Manufacturers and Distributor information, to include Part Numbers, Freight Data, Hazardous Materiel Indicators, Interchangeable and Substitution data, Acquisition Advice Code (AAC) and Unit Price, Physical and Performance Characteristics along with service specific management data. FED LOG is available for download by .mil or .gov customers with NIPRNET access via FedMall http://www.fedmall.mil under the tools menu.

Web Federal Logistics Information System (WebFLIS)

WebFLIS is a tool that provides essential information about supply items including the NSN, the item name and company data (including part numbers), through a web interface connected to Federal Logistics Information System (FLIS) data. This information is primarily used by DLA, military services, and United States Government sponsored contractors doing business with the U.S. Government. WebFLIS data is updated multiple times a day. WebFLIS has additional tabs such as Advanced Characteristics Search, Medical, Weapon System and a Bill of Material (BOM)/Sets, Kits and Outfits (SKO) to allow users to narrow down searches using specific filtering and clear text supply codes with the ability to translate.

Public Logistics (PUB LOG)

PUB LOG is intended for use by the public who require National Stock Number (NSN) and other publicly releasable cataloging information including Federal Supply Classification (FSC) data and Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) codes. PUB LOG can be downloaded from the FLIS e-Reading Room. Updated products with complete datasets are uploaded on the 1st of every month. All proprietary data and service unique data on the NSN is excluded. Most public and contractor requirements are satisfied through PUB LOG tool and the download contains both the classic version and the new, user friendly “IMD2” version. Contractors that require FED LOG data are able to download from FedMall, if they have a CAC and access to the government NIPRNet.
