DLA Distribution Commanding General's Labor Day Message

By BG John S. Laskodi

Teammates,

The upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend signals the end of the summer season for most of us and is a good opportunity to take one last summertime break from work before the start of the new fiscal year and the new school year for our children. Many of us welcome the long weekend as another occasion for a break from work, but we may forget that it is also a time of national recognition and celebration of the American workforce.

As you contemplate your activities for the holiday weekend, please take a moment to remember those affected by Hurricane Harvey and particularly our Distribution employees and their families in Corpus Christi, TX.  Thankfully, the storm missed hitting Corpus Christi directly and, while we are still assessing damages, it appears the major damage was limited to the roof of our main warehouse and water damage to some office spaces.  Most importantly, we’ve had zero injuries to our workforce or their immediate families.  While a few families are still without power, there has only been relatively minor damage to personal property.  The DDCT team is showing great resiliency and is already back at work supporting their local and global customers.

Our DLA Distribution Expeditionary Teams (DDXX) from Susquehanna and Red River are currently deployed to Randolph AFB, TX reinforcing FEMA as the Lead Federal Agency providing support to the State of Texas.  While Hurricane Harvey was still pounding the Gulf Coast, our DDXX teams were already deploying to operate the main FEMA Incident Staging Base.  The numbers are growing exponentially every day, but the DDXX has already processed several hundred trucks carrying critical supplies to the citizens of Houston and the surrounding areas including almost two million bottles of water, over two million shelf-stable meals, and thousands of blankets.  This has been an incredible DLA team effort and I’m overwhelmed by the passion with which our workforce attacks each of these missions.  These teammates have volunteered to sacrifice their Labor Day weekend because they understand the importance of their mission, so please keep them and their families in your thoughts as you celebrate with yours this Labor Day weekend.

On behalf of Ms. Gonzales and I, and from my family to yours, enjoy some well-deserved time with family and friends and thank you for what you do every day.  I am proud to be on your team!

Happy Labor Day!
