DLA Distribution Barstow welcomes new director

Matthew J. Balogh became director of DLA Distribution Barstow, California, May 24. DDBC stores over 59,800 warfighter support items valued at over $2.1 billion at two locations on Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, a United States Marine Corps supply and maintenance installation located in the Mojave Desert east of Barstow, in San Bernardino County, Southern California.

“Matt has over 37 years of Department of Defense experience in logistics operations management, contract administration and transportation operations management,” said Senior Executive Service Deputy Commander DLA Distribution, Ms. Twila C. Gonzales. “He is well prepared for his new role.” 

Most recently, Balogh served as deputy director, DLA Distribution Barstow from January 2015 through April 2019. Before that, Balogh served as the contracting officer’s representative, DLA Distribution Barstow.

“I am truly honored and humbled by being selected as the next Director for the Barstow, California Distribution Center and will do my best to sustain the high level of service we have always provided,” said Balogh. “I really take pride in the mission we perform by providing the best possible service and support to all our customers but more importantly, to the warfighter.”

Balogh said that audit readiness and accountability are at the forefront of everything they do.
“Our team will continue to ensure that we are constantly looking for better, more cost effective and efficient ways of providing the highest levels of support in everything we do,” said Balogh.

Balogh has a list of military and civilian accomplishments. He served as contracting officer representative for the Continuing Government Activity, Defense Logistics Agency, U.S. Marine Corps Logistics Base, Barstow, California. Balogh served as a transportation operations specialist, Department of the Army, Fort Dix, New Jersey, from May 2008 through June 2009. He was a contract officer’s representative/quality assurance evaluator, providing contract surveillance over a $34.6 million, contingency operations contract in support of the U.S. Army’s largest wartime training base, covering more than 45,000 acres.

Balogh’s U.S. Air Force assignments and duty stations include: superintendent, Air Terminal Operations Center, Okinawa, Japan (Retired), September 2005-April 2008; air terminal manager (NATO), Izmir Air Station, Turkey, 2004-05; superintendent, Combat Readiness & Resources, Okinawa, Japan, May 2000-September 2004; and senior air logistics coordinator, Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC).

Balogh also served in various Air Transportation Operations positions, in Okinawa, Japan. He was superintendent, Air Force Special Operations Command, Aerial Delivery operations. He was the contracting officer’s representative, Philadelphia International. Airport, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from May 1988-Jun 1995. He served as Air Transportation Ops, Decimomannu Air Base, Sardinia, Italy, March 1987-May 1988; Air Passenger Operations/Honor Guard, Scott Air Force Base, Illinois, from January 1985-March 1987; Air Passenger Operations, Osan Air Base, South Korea, from 1984-1985; Air Passenger Operations/Honor Guard, McChord AFB, Washington, September 1982-January 1984.

In 1982 he attended Basic Military Training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, and Technical Training School, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. Balogh has received many civilian and military awards to include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Commendation Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Korean Defense Service Medal.

“We have an absolutely awesome team here in Barstow,” said Balogh. “We will continue to fulfill the mission of DLA Distribution in meeting all future demands and challenges that come our way.”
