Our Acquisition Workforce

Taking a look at the difference between DLA acquisition capabilities during the Gulf War in 1990-1991 and DLA's current capabilities with a smaller workforce and a global acquisition stage.

Fort Belvoir, Virginia –

The Gulf War ended thirty years ago this February. Among the several ways DLA supported the conflict was the 40,000 contract actions our acquisition workforce conducted with 1,000 companies. At first blush, these numbers seem impressive, and they were in 1990/1991. Today, however, our acquisition workforce regularly executes between 8,000 and 10,000 contract actions a day. In other words, at our normal rate of procurement, we can provide the same support we provided for the mobilization and conduct of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in just five days. We had over 60,000 employees in 1990/1991. We have fewer than 27,000 today.
