DLA Installation Management Susquehanna begins annual April PrepareAthon information campaign

By Rick Zucchero, Security & Emergency Services, DLA Installation Management Susquehanna

April’s PrepareAthon was developed to motivate everyone to act and to prepare for disasters that may affect their communities. Each week in April, DLA Installation Management Susquehanna’s Emergency Management will provide topics to assist employees in preparation for emergency incidents or disasters at work or at home.

Severe weather in the spring - A few points to know:

Thunderstorms

  • Severe thunderstorms can produce damaging wind and/or large hail.
  • When you hear thunder there’s lightning. “When thunder roars, go indoors.”
  • Lightning is a leading cause of injury and death from weather related hazards.
  • See attachment for additional information.

Tornadoes

  • Even in the mid-Atlantic region, tornadoes can happen anytime, anywhere!
  • Tornadoes can destroy buildings, flip cars, and create deadly flying debris.
  • If a tornado warning is issued, seek immediate shelter in the nearest Shelter-In-Place location. If not at work seek shelter in a basement, or interior room away from windows on the lowest floor and cover your head.

Floods

  • Check local news or the Pennsylvania travel website - 511PA to see if roads are closed.
  • Watch for messages from the Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna’s AtHoc Mass Notification Warning System which may direct you to another installation entrance due to local flooded roads.
  • Turn around, don’t drown.  Never walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters as they may be contaminated and contain dangerous debris. Downed power lines can also electrically charge the water.

For more information related to storm preparedness check with your local DLA Distribution Emergency Services manager. Additional preparedness information can be found at www.ready.gov.
