Kurze’s rise to DLA Executive Director: A testament to women’s empowerment in leadership

By Natalie Skelton, DLA Aviation Public Affairs

In celebration of Women's History Month, Defense Logistics Agency Aviation spotlights Daniele Kurze, pronounced quart-za, recently selected to serve as the executive director of Small Business Programs at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. This historic moment marks a first for DLA as the newly created position is designated as a senior-level position; classified above a GS-15. Kurze's appointment ties perfectly with this year's theme: “Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.”

From her early days studying urban land development at Virginia Commonwealth University, she cultivated skills pivotal for her future roles. “This experience significantly shaped my leadership approach and decision-making process,” Kurze said.

Her career progression started with the Virginia Department of Transportation in an environment that encouraged innovation and positive change.

“The support and empowerment provided by my colleagues and leaders ignited my desire to pursue leadership roles,” Kurze recalls. This foundation laid the groundwork for her eventual transition to DLA Aviation, where she continued her ascent through various leadership positions.

“In my role at VDOT, I was already immersed in logistics, aside from a different end product and user,” Kurze said. “Recognizing the inherent similarities, I deliberately chose to join the Defense Logistics Agency with the firm intention of continuing my leadership journey in a field that aligned with my passion and expertise.”

Since joining DLA Aviation in 2010, Kurze's leadership style has evolved to focus on embracing diverse mindsets and promoting a culture of continuous learning.

“While gender has not been a defining factor in how I am perceived, I have come to understand that competence and dedication are universal currencies in the professional realm,” she said. Kurze's approach underscores her advocacy for equity and inclusion, transcending gender in defining professional success.

One significant challenge Kurze faced, especially after becoming a mother, was overcoming societal stereotypes. Her determination to excel in her career and be a positive role model for her children highlights the importance of challenging norms and fostering environments where women can thrive professionally, irrespective of their roles outside work.

“Rather than succumbing to external judgments, I focused on doing the best in my career, not despite having children but because of them,” she said. “This mindset allowed me to navigate through challenges and maintain my trajectory in leadership roles.”

Kurze's advice to women in the workforce is clear and empowering,

“Women aiming for leadership roles should strategically plan their career, seizing growth opportunities with proactive goal setting and added initiative,” she said. “Emphasize mentorship and networking for broader perspectives and support, while continuously learning to adapt to evolving industry trends. Cultivate a positive office culture by steering clear of gossip, fostering constructive communication, and promoting mutual support.

“Equally important is maintaining work-life balance and self-care, setting boundaries for personal well-being, which is crucial for sustainable career success,” Kurze continued. “By integrating these strategies, women can navigate and overcome the challenges on their leadership journey.”

Her selection as the executive director of Small Business Programs reflects her dedication and achievements. Kurze's experience in managing diverse contracts and developing supportive procedures and policies for small businesses has been instrumental in her career progression. Her role at DLA Aviation, particularly within the Supplier Operations Commodities Directorate, provided her with insights into the challenges faced by small businesses, fueling her passion for making a difference.

Mentorship and professional networks have played a significant role in Kurze's career.

“Diversity in mentorship has been key to my development,” she notes, highlighting the importance of receiving guidance from a variety of perspectives. This approach has enriched her understanding of the professional landscape and enhanced her effectiveness as a leader.

As she steps into her new role, Kurze plans to engage with stakeholders to set a vision for promoting diversity and inclusion within the Small Business Programs. Her approach, centered on listening and assessment, reflects her commitment to creating an inclusive environment in the sector.

For young professionals aspiring to leadership roles, Kurze wants her message to inspire: set high goals, embrace resilience and relentlessly pursue personal growth.

“Every experience, whether positive or challenging, contributes to your overall development,” she advises.
