NORFOLK, Virginia –
April 1 marked the 124th birthday of the Navy chief petty officer rank. The team at DLA Distribution Norfolk, Virginia, paused on March 31 to celebrate this event.
Leadership and those who served as Navy chiefs, senior chiefs, and master chiefs swapped "chief" stories, learned the history of the chief petty officer rank though posters and a video, and, of course, enjoyed birthday cake.
Navy Capt. Harry Thetford, commander of DLA Distribution Norfolk, said "Chiefs are the backbone of the Navy." DLA Distribution Norfolk employee Julie Chandoo, a retired master chief herself, planned the event to promote camaraderie, celebrate the Navy’s heritage, and to keep the chief legacy alive.
