Women’s History Month Spotlight: Marian Unterman

By DLA Public Affairs

Editor’s note: The Defense Logistics Agency recognizes March as Women’s History Month. In honor of women’s contributions to the agency’s global mission, DLA is highlighting female employees who work day in and day out to provide logistics support to America’s warfighters.

My name is:
Marian Unterman

I am:
A supply systems analyst for DLA Logistics Operations.

Describe your job in a sentence:
My primary job is serving as the deputy project manager for the U.S. Marine Corps - DLA Industrial Supply Integration Project, through which DLA expects to assume responsibility for supply, storage and distribution functions at Marine Corps industrial sites in Albany, Georgia, and Barstow, California. I am also very active on the DLA Logistics Operations Work Force Council.

How long have you worked at DLA?
I have worked at DLA for 25 years in May. I always say to people, “If you told me when I started that I’d be walking through these same doors 25 years later, I would have said you were crazy.” But, DLA is an amazing place to work and so I stayed.

What is your favorite thing about working for DLA?
Oh, wow, there are so many things! I really enjoy supporting our soldiers, the professionalism of my colleagues, the three hours we’re allotted for fitness each week and the flexible work environment.

What are your best memories of working here?
I’ve moved around quite a bit within DLA Headquarters, from the DLA Transportation Policy Branch and Office of the Secretary of Defense Fellows Program to distribution operations, planning and now retail operations. When I worked in the Transportation Policy Branch, the people were close-knit and a lot of fun. We would eat our way to the holidays because everyone in the office would bring in special treats. I also loved coaching the “Couch to 5K” for the Fitness Council a few years ago. It was amazing to see the progress of the participants. Lastly, I’ve had the opportunity to help organize a few general officer retirements, which are always fun to see come to fruition. Military retirements are special and often tearjerkers that give me overwhelming gratitude for the people who have sacrificed for my freedom.

How do you make a difference?
I believe in kindness and I try to reach out and respond to those in need, professionally and personally.

How do you resolve conflict in the workplace and at home?
My biggest lessons regarding conflict came from Don Miguel Ruiz’s book “The Four Agreements.” Three of the agreements – don’t take anything personally, always do your best, and don’t make assumptions – apply to conflict. When I experience conflict, I try to understand the other person’s position in a real way. I feel that conflict mostly arises from misunderstanding or taking things personally, so I ask clarifying questions. The awareness that my feelings about a situation may not be reality is very freeing.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?
I see Women’s History Month as an opportunity to acknowledge the many inspirational accomplishments of women in our society.
