DLA Modern Desktop effort wins AFCEA distinguished award

By DLA Information Operations

Defense Logistics Agency Information Operations was recently honored by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association for its implementation of the Modern Desktop.

Deputy Director of DLA Information Operations Robert Foster and Director of Technology Foundation Services R. Dempsey Hackett accepted the Distinguished Award for Excellence in Information Technology at the AFCEA International Awards dinner at the Baltimore Convention Center June 12.

“I’m very happy to report that our entire workforce was selected by the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association as the winner of its Distinguished Award for Excellence in Information Technology for our implementation of the Modern Desktop,” Foster said. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team for their hard work and innovation.”

The Modern Desktop is a virtual mobile environment designed to ensure DLA users have access to the network through multiple access points and have the latest software and enhanced security to perform their jobs. The Modern Desktop initiative includes Office 365, H: Drive consolidation, iPhone deployments, and the Virtual Desktop Infrastructure.

“This award recognized DLA’s paramount IT accomplishment: implementing the Modern Desktop, a complex, global, enterprisewide transformation,” Foster said. “[DLA Chief Information Officer Kathy Cutler] led this team effort, but this nomination recognizes the entire 3,000-person Modern Desktop team.”

According to its website, AFCEA is a non-profit international organization that provides a forum for military, government and industry communities to collaborate on information technology, communications and electronics capabilities.
