MARIANAS, Guam –
DLA Distribution Guam, Marianas, has been awarded the Global Distribution Excellence: Patricia A. Kuntz Distribution Center of the Year – Small award for their outstanding support to the warfighter in the Pacific.
During the Valiant Shield 16 exercise, the distribution center served as the strategic distribution point for all associated material, which resulted in a 116 percent workload increase during the exercise period with no increase in resources. “Our ability to remain flexible and responsive to changing material delivery and re-distribution requirements was an integral part of the success realized in Valiant Shield 16,” said Macy Ooka, director of DLA Distribution Guam. The team processed more than 8,100 Material Processing Center transactions, which is a surge of more than 19 percent in MPC workload.
Joint coordination between DLA Distribution Guam and beach detachments from the Navy and Marine Corps led to expedited material deliveries onboard the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group and Bonhomme Richard Expeditionary Strike Group vessels.
DLA Distribution Guam was the first to execute DLA’s Distribution Supply Vessel Proof of Principle by coordinating and executing inventory transfer, material accountability and logistical support requirements. This enabled a successful material support strategy PoP that provides a flexible and responsive solution to afloat units. The lessons learned from this initial PoP will be used to plan future DSV deployments.
The distribution center also processed an influx of more than 1,100 energy dissipating pads, consisting of 48 SEAVAN (equivalent to 40 feet) containers and more than 55,200 storage cube. The containers arrived in a very compressed schedule that put a strain on limited personnel and facility resources; however, all containers were processed along with normal workload within the time allotted and with zero demurrage fees incurred.
Coordinating with SDDC and Fleet Logistics Center Yokosuka, the distribution center helped with Task Force Koa Moana, which enabled a seamless cargo transfer from the USNS ship, through DLA Distribution Guam, to commercial surface freight carriers in less than 12 hours. “Our teamwork and coordination was instrumental to the redeployment timeline success that allowed the Marines and Sailors assigned to Task Force Koa Moana to make it home for the holidays,” said Ooka.
