DLA Aviation employees donate more than 80 thousand bottles of water for hurricane relief

By Cathy Hopkins DLA Aviation Public Affairs

There is nothing wrong with some friendly competition among family members and Defense Logistics Agency Aviation, Supplier Operations Directorate’s employees have been competing monthly for the last two years to earn their Director’s Cup Award.

Earlier this month, the divisions turn their competition to humanitarian relief for victims of Hurricane Irma, which hit Florida on Sept. 10.

According to event organizer Crystal Holmes, a DLA Aviation Supplier Operations supervisory contracting officer,  “With the hurricane devastation in Texas and Florida, the thought of doing a water drive to help supply water to the locations that needed it was exciting … just to be able to help!”

Directorate employees working on Defense Supply Center Richmond, Virginia had an initial goal to collect 500 cases of water.

“That goal was blown to pieces,” said Holmes. “We collected 80,110 bottles of water, with Rob Baker’s division winning the competition after collecting 29,891 bottles.”

“I’m very fortunate and proud to be surrounded by an amazing Division of people, whether it’s water bottle donation competition or our day-to-day work … the folks of this Division exceed every goal or challenge I put in front of them,”  said Rob Baker, chief, Contract Administration Division, Supplier Operations Commodities Directorate.

The group worked with a local church in Powhatan, Virginia, that partners with a disaster relief team in Danville.  With the help of directorate and DLA Installation Support at Richmond personnel, trucks were loaded and church members picked the water up Sept. 20 for delivery to counties in need throughout Florida.

DLA Aviation Supplier Operations Director Navy Capt. Robert Keating started the Director’s Cup two years ago to promote teambuilding within and with divisions. Activities have included bowling, volleyball, ping pong, an escape room and a scavenger hunt.
