DLA Distribution commander delivers MLK Day remarks

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs DLA Distribution

On Monday, 16 January, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy with a day away from work; unlike other holidays, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is meant to be a day of action, a day on, not a day off.

Though Dr. King is most known for his life’s efforts to achieving social justice through non-violent means, he was also known for the emphasis he placed on service. “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” he once said. While he was a leader in the civil rights movement, he also worked to end poverty and fought for better working conditions for all.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not only for celebration and remembrance, education, and tribute, it is, above all, a day of service. This very special day builds on Dr. King's legacy of service to others by giving back to the community in his honor. This tribute provides an extraordinary opportunity to come together not only to celebrate the spirit and vision of Dr. King but also inspires us to follow his example.

As we reflect on this day, I encourage you to celebrate the life of Dr. King as a day on. Many of your teammates volunteer in their communities in an assortment of ways. I also encourage you to read the attached Newsletter on the history of this special day prepared by our Equal Opportunity Office. Whatever you do this holiday weekend, find a way to give something back to your community…it is a perfect way to honor Dr. King and pay forward to future generations.

I, along with Mr. Knight, thank you and your families for all you do to support the organization, our Warfighters, and our great Nation.
