Sharyn Saunders

Director, DLA Human Resources

On September 12, 2021, Ms. Saunders, became the Director, DLA Human Resources (J1).  Serving as the Director, J1 she is responsible for providing expert professional executive leadership, impetus, and direction in establishing and maintaining a proactive, visionary, vigorous, human resources program that is responsive to the needs of both DLA management and employees and assures optimum productivity and goal attainment in all program functions. Worldwide mission responsibilities of the Director, Human Resources include: human resources program planning, evaluation, and policy development; organizational manpower and allocation management; position management and classification; recruitment and staffing; incentives; performance management; awards; employee orientation, development, and training; talent and succession management; policy development; labor relations program guidance and policy development; employee relations; employee communications; human resources information services; pay/compensation and benefits administration; employee services and counseling; and military personnel management.

Prior to arriving at DLA, Ms. Saunders served as the Assistant Administrator, Human Resources Division, Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Department of Justice.  In this role, she was responsible for all Human Resource matters, policy and service delivery consisting of talent acquisition, workforce planning and classification, staffing and recruitment, suitability, compensation and benefits, career management, employee relations and performance management, executive resources, HR accountability, human resources  information systems, the Disciplinary Boards process, the DEA Clinic, medical services, drug and alcohol testing, oversight of the DEA Training Academy at Quantico, Virginia, and providing services to 23 domestic field divisions with 239 field offices and 91 foreign offices in 69 countries. 

Prior to serving at DEA, Ms. Saunders served as the Director, Army Resiliency Directorate, Headquarters Department of the Army; Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff, G1, where she led a community of 36,000 personnel through a cultural transformation to establish effective strategies, develop plans and formulate policies to design, implement and lead a collaborative, coherent and multi-disciplinary approach to provide leaders the capability to sustain Personal Readiness for units, Soldiers, Civilians and Family Members by tailoring proactive and prevention measures to promote physical, psychological, social, spiritual, family preparedness.

Ms. Saunders became a member of the Senior Executive Service in 2013 and possesses an extensive background in human resources with over 27-years of experience in strategic-level human resources, performance management and administration.  She has a Master’s in Business Administration from Western Governors University, Salt Lake City, Utah.
