A Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support employee was recognized for recruiting college students and recent graduates with disabilities into the agency through the Workforce Recruitment Program.
Michael Cowley, an equal employment specialist, received the first WRP Recruiter of the Year Award for recruiting more than 130 interns through the program during the past 13 years. More than 50 of those interns became permanent federal employees.
Cowley found out he earned the award by e-mail from the Department of Defense Office of Diversity Management and Equal Opportunity.
“In the subject line of the e-mail, I was informed that I had been selected as the DOD Component Outstanding WRP Recruiter,” Cowley said. “This is an awesome accomplishment.”
The program matches students’ academic majors with career fields that can lead to permanent positions through the Pathways to Career Excellence or intern program. Cowley believes earning the award demonstrates DLA Troop Support’s commitment to hiring those who have the necessary skill sets to support the warfighters.
“I hope that the greatest impact is raising awareness that individuals with disabilities can, and do, support our mission,” Cowley said.
Ruben Filomeno, director of DLA Troop Support’s Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity office, said that the award recognizes the great work that Cowley has performed in support of the WRP.
“Mike’s work is enabling DLA Troop Support to continue to build a world-class and diverse workforce capable of performing at a high level,” Filomeno said.
