Yokosuka distribution center hosts training event for Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force officers

DLA Distribution Public Affairs

DLA Distribution Yokosuka, Japan provided a training engagement for 28 Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force officers on DLA business concepts and the distribution center operations during a visit to the distribution center on June 11. The purpose of the visit was to learn of the theater distribution operations that DLA performs for all DoD services and components in Japan.  After a DLA business concept and logistics operations briefing, a facilities tour to observe receipt processing, warehousing, packaging, and transportation was provided.

Besides the traditional mochi tsuki or rice pounding ceremony and customary exchange of cultural gifts between allies, the U.S. Armed Forces and the JMSDF have steadily forged an alliance through cooperative participation in world affairs and military training over the past several decades.  This bond is evident in the ongoing relationship between DLA Distribution Yokosuka and the JMSDF, Japan’s combined naval, air and ground forces.  The partnership dates as far back as 1952 when Yokosuka was the distribution element of what was known as the Naval Supply Depot.

The officers were given a command brief on the vision, mission and structure of DLA and Distribution, including the global network of 24 distribution centers that store and ship supplies to the warfighters.  They were also given a tour of the Yokosuka facilities where operations for receiving, storage, inventory, system support, packing and shipping were in progress.

Yokosuka continues to encourage and support training programs between U.S. and Japan forces.  Activities such as these undoubtedly serve to deepen the friendship and mutual understanding of these two nations, and immensely contribute to the stability of this vital region.
