COLUMBUS, Ohio –
Each year, during the month of May, we celebrate and honor the contributions that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have made and the part they have played in the history of this country. This year’s theme is “Honoring the Past, Securing the Future!” The theme pays tribute to the Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders and Native Hawaiians who answered the call of selfless service by participating in the defense of our nation. This year’s theme coincides with the 75th Anniversary of World War II.
Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime’s poster honors First Sergeant Thomas Harimoto from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team. During World War II, the 442nd was composed of Japanese-American citizens or “Nisei.” During the war, they fought in eight major campaigns throughout Europe. Their motto “Go for Broke!” was not just mere words as these soldiers displayed unmatched courage and resolve during the war. They were one of the most decorated regiments, earning more than 18,000 individual decorations and eight Presidential Unit Citations. These soldiers fought and served bravely and they knew they were fighting for the future.
We encourage all DLA Land and Maritime associates to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month by “honoring the past” of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team’s extraordinary accomplishments.
