DLA Distribution Commander delivers National Disability Awareness Month message

By DLA Distirbution Public Affairs

This October, we celebrate the 77th National Disability Employment Awareness Month. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the theme for this year’s awareness month is, “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation,” in recognition of the vital role people with disabilities play in making the nation’s workforce diverse and inclusive.

As we celebrate the contributions to the nation’s economy made by workers with disabilities, I encourage you to review the attached DLA Distribution EEO Disability Awareness Month newsletter. This issue includes articles on defining a disability, the Americans with Disabilities Act, understanding the Reasonable Accommodation Process, tips for interacting with people with disabilities, and resources for employees with disabilities. The newsletter also includes information on the Workforce Recruitment Program, a program for students and recent graduates with disabilities who are eager to demonstrate their abilities in the workplace. In fact, the editor of the newsletter, Ms. Kylie Young, was a WRP student working in DLA Distribution Public Affairs for two summers before she was hired as a full-time civilian employee with DLA Distribution EEO. Ms. Young was also named the DOD WRP Student of the Year for 2021!

Mr. Knight and I ask you to join us in a pledge to continue to take steps throughout the year to recruit, hire, develop, advance and retain people with disabilities and work to pursue the goals of equal opportunity, full participation, economic self-sufficiency, and independent living for people with disabilities. By learning more about disability employment issues and celebrating the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities, we capitalize on the strengths of our diverse workforce, closing the loop on the equity equation as we recognize the role our many workers with disabilities play in our team’s quest to support the Warfighter Always!
