DLA results revealed for 2022 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey

By DLA Public Affairs

Over 92 percent of Defense Logistics Agency employees who participated in the 2022 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey agreed their work contributes to the common good, according to survey data.

This is just one of many data points from the survey that will help inform the agency’s analyses of employee perceptions and organizational effectiveness. The Office of Personnel Management administers the FEVS each year to assess how federal employees feel about their work experiences, organization and leadership.

The agency’s 2022 response rate was 26 percent, slightly higher than the Defense Department’s response rate. DLA employees responded positively to most survey questions. DLA also received favorable scores of 75 percent and 70 percent on the employee engagement index and the global satisfaction index, respectively.

Examples of the agency’s strengths include:

  1. 92.1 percent agreed that “I am held accountable for the quality of work I produce.”
  2. 91.8 percent agreed that “Employees in my work unit meet the needs of our customers.”
  3. 90.8 percent agreed that “My supervisor holds me accountable for achieving results.”

“DLA outperformed other agencies across the federal government in terms of overall engagement, inclusion and job satisfaction rates,” said DLA Human Resources Director Sharyn Saunders. “While the results are encouraging, surveys like these continue to help us measure whether staff feel like leaders lead, their work is meaningful, and they are satisfied with their jobs, pay and the organization as a whole.”

In 2022, OPM introduced a Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Index to the FEVS, which measures how federal employees feel about their agency’s efforts to promote DEIA values in the workplace. DLA scored 74 percent on the DEIA Index, higher than the DOD score of 70 percent and the government-wide average of 69 percent.

“The FEVS is a valuable resource because it shows us what’s working and the areas where we can make improvements,” Saunders said.

Responses also indicated that continually changing work priorities make it hard to produce high quality work and DLA management can do more to involve employees in decisions that affect their work.

Culture champions have received a customized report and leaders have access to their organization’s data through the executive dashboard. Saunders encouraged managers and employees to use that data to identify weaknesses and develop actions plans to overcome gaps.

“As we look to the future, I call upon staff and leadership alike to use our collective strengths and commitment to create the optimal workplace,” she said. “We all have a role in building an agency where everyone’s voices are heard and respected.”

The FEVS is one of the largest employee surveys in the country. In 2022, it was sent to 1.6 million federal employees.

DLA employees will have another opportunity to share their views on life and work at the agency when the 2023 Denison Culture and Climate Survey launches Aug. 21. Together, these surveys will offer a more comprehensive approach to understanding and improving employees’ experiences at DLA.
