COLUMBUS, Ohio –
The Defense Supply Center Columbus is gearing up for another wintry weekend of single-digit temperatures. There are several ways DSCC employees can find out about changes to the installation’s operating status during winter weather and other emergencies.
- In the rare event DSCC is impacted by a weather delay or closure, operating status changes will be announced on the DLA Land and Maritime homepage.
- Employees can also call the DSCC weather hotline at 614-692-1800 for operating status information.
- Central Ohio television stations including WCMH 4, WSYX 6, WBNS 10 and WTTE 28 will run installation delays and closure announcements both on-air and on their web pages.
- Employees can choose to be notified of changes in DSCC’s operating status on their mobile or home phone numbers, text or through email by signing up for AtHoc emergency notifications. Visit the DLA Service Portal and refer to KB0011511 (CAC-enabled) for information on signing up for AtHoc.
- Sign up for weather alerts through the Ohio Emergency Management Agency website.
In support of worldwide missions, DSCC will normally remain open and operational during weather conditions. Commuters should exercise caution when traveling and monitor news channels for weather announcements and anticipated driving conditions.
The Defense Health Agency offers the following information for traveling in winter weather:
- Wear multiple layers of clothing under a warm jacket, gloves, a scarf and a hat that covers your ears. Avoid footwear with hard leather soles. Soft rubber-soled shoes or boots are better on slick and slushy surfaces.
- Stay on plowed and treated sidewalks.
- Before crossing a street, make eye contact with any approaching drivers to ensure that they see you.
- When driving, keep well behind trucks spreading salt or sand. Spreader trucks often back up; if you are too close, the driver may not see you.
- Give yourself extra time to get where you want to go.
- Remember – thinking ahead and being prepared will give you the best chance of having a safe and enjoyable winter season.
Prepare your car for winter weather:
- Make sure your battery is relatively new and fully charged.
- Check your tires for a good amount of remaining tread life.
- Inspect your windshield wiper blades — they should be replaced yearly.
- Make sure your wiper fluid level is topped off with fluid that will not freeze.
- Always have a sturdy ice scraper available to clear ice and snow from your vehicle
- Carry in your trunk a blanket, extra gloves, jumper cables and a bag of kitty litter for traction under spinning tires.
