Coast Guard to provide liaison officer to DLA

By Jacob Boyer

The Defense Logistics Agency’s director of logistics operations and the commander of the Coast Guard Operational Logistics Command signed an agreement May 30 that will place a Coast Guard liaison officer with the Whole-of-Government Division at DLA Headquarters.

Under the first-of-its-kind agreement, which was signed by Navy Rear Adm. Doug Noble and Coast Guard Rear Adm. Carola List, an officer from the LOGCOM Expeditionary Logistics Division, Coast Guard Lt. Chad Huemme, will join DLA’s operations staff and help synchronize the two organizations for one year.

“While we are currently closely aligned with USCG logistics from a policy perspective, this is an exciting opportunity to get better insight into their real-time requirements and ongoing operations,” said Noble, who also serves as the DLA commander of joint regional combat support. “This is a bright spot in what has been a great partnership.”

Noble and List challenged their teams to develop quantitative metrics that measure the effectiveness of the role and assess whether to continue after the one-year agreement.

“The partnership between DLA and the Coast Guard has never been stronger, and this is an opportunity to expand on that,” List said. “Chad’s the right person for this job. I’m super excited to see what he does.”

Joe Brooks, director of the DLA Logistics Operations’ Whole-of-Government Division, said the LNO will help ensure interoperability in future operations.

“As we look across the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command area of responsibility, interoperability and interchangeability are musts,” he said. “We must have those qualities with our allies and partners and also with our own uniformed services, inside and outside of the Department of Defense.”
