BATTLE CREEK, Mich. –
Sara Vaughn is a current member of Pathways to Career Excellence Program Group 46, which began in 2023. For her second year in the PaCE Program, she will remain at Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, in the Contracting directorate.
Why did you apply to the PaCE Program?
I became aware of this program because my husband is a PaCE alumnus, and I witnessed the opportunities and growth within the agency that it has provided to him. I also had the privilege of meeting the Disposition Services Director, Mr. Mike Cannon, and listening to him describe the PaCE Program fueled my desire to pursue the opportunity.
What was your position before the PaCE Program?
I was a Material Examiner & Identifier for DLA Disposition Services at the Warner Robins, Georgia, site before coming to Headquarters.
What have been your favorite parts of the PaCE Program?
A rewarding aspect of my experience has been cultivating meaningful relationships and connections with DLA colleagues worldwide at different sites. Additionally, I value the mentorship provided by leadership, as they consistently demonstrate a willingness to offer guidance and support.
Do you have a favorite memory or experience in the PaCE Program so far?
One of my most cherished experiences was during a temporary duty assignment or TDY to Tucson, Arizona, back to the warehouse operations. It was enlightening to observe the unique approaches adopted by various employees while adhering to the same Standard Operating Procedures. Witnessing the dedication of every MEI while optimizing workflow with their personalized touch instilled a deep appreciation for the collective efforts. Beyond their diligent work ethic, the team prioritized camaraderie by having a potluck gathering every Friday. They took time to unwind and enjoy steak tacos together which fostered a sense of community amidst their demanding schedules.
If there was one thing that could’ve been different for you in the PaCE Program, what would it be?
I wish I was a little more relaxed about relocation. I moved to a new state, a new house, with new schools for my kids, and a new job for my husband. Taking each day as it comes allows for a more manageable and less overwhelming experience.
What would you say is the most important quality to succeed in the PaCE Program?
The most important quality is commitment to learning and to welcome challenges, regardless of their scale or complexity, and always embrace and reward the positive no matter how small it is. Good energy and positivity are always contagious.
In your own words, how would you describe the PaCE Program, and what can you gain from it?
The PaCE Program is a once in a lifetime opportunity that offers a chance to acquire invaluable knowledge, wisdom, and mentorship in leadership. The program has afforded me opportunities beyond my initial expectations, contributing significantly to my growth and development as a prospective leader.
Where are you assigned to next year?
I am pleased to share that I have been selected for placement at Disposition Services Headquarters location in Battle Creek, Michigan, which was my top preference within the contracting branch. This represents a rare opportunity to assume a hybrid role, combining responsibilities as a property disposal specialist with environmental and contracting duties.
What are your plans for your future in the agency?
I envision a long-term commitment with DLA Disposition Services and I am prepared to serve wherever the agency deems my skills necessary to fulfill its mission. I am eager to embrace any challenges or opportunities that arise, recognizing that my potential for advancement to higher GS level is limitless.
Editorial Note: The Pathways to Career Excellence Program for DLA Disposition Services is a two-year program that takes PaCErs through all of Disposition Services and its processes to learn as much as possible about the directorate. The first year takes place at DLA Disposition Services Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, and the second year either takes place in Battle Creek for Contracting PaCErs or at an assigned field site for Property Disposal PaCErs. PaCErs begin as general schedule 7s, move to GS-9s at the end of their first year, and graduate the program as GS-11s. There are multiple pathways to becoming a PaCEr, including being hired internally, as a recent graduate, or from military service.
