DLA Distribution hosts travel program forum

Defense Logistics Agency Distribution hosted the first-ever travel forum for the entire DLA agency, organized by the travel program office on July 9 through July 11. The forum was an opportunity for agency-wide cohesive training on the complexities of official government travel.

"This forum represents a significant step forward in our efforts to streamline travel processes and ensure compliance across the board," said Trey Lescovitz, Chief, DLA Travel Program. "By bringing together key players in the travel management chain, we've created an unprecedented opportunity for knowledge sharing and collaborative problem-solving."

The event focused on equipping organizational defense travel administrators, agency program coordinators and authorizing officials with the knowledge and skills necessary to administrate the defense travel program. Participants engaged in a variety of sessions designed to enhance their understanding of the Defense Travel System and Defense Department travel policies.

Throughout the three-day event, attendees delved into critical aspects of defense travel like navigating the DTS web portal, travel policy, fiscal responsibility and customer service strategies.

The forum also highlighted several important points for attendees to take back with them to their respective organizations to educate travelers.

Accuracy in travel authorizations is necessary. Ensuring all details are correct before submission can prevent delays and issues during the approval process. Part of the training for participants was in learning how to train and educate travelers within their own organizations.

Travelers should be familiar with their allowances and entitlements to avoid out-of-pocket expenses. Maintaining receipts is necessary for audit purposes and justifying expenses, while also making voucher submission prompt and easy. Training on the proper use of government travel cards to cover travel expenses was also discussed.

Attendees praised the forum for its comprehensive approach and the opportunity to network with colleagues facing similar challenges across different DLA sites.

The event not only provided a deeper understanding of the roles necessary but also established connections that will support our enterprise in our day-to-day operations."
The success of this event has prompted discussions about making the travel forum an annual occurrence, with plans to expand its scope and reach in the future.

As DLA continues to refine the travel management processes, events like this forum play a crucial role in ensuring that all personnel involved in defense travel administration are well-equipped to support the agency's mission effectively and efficiently.
