BATTLE CREEK, Mich. –
Paul Turner is a current member of Pathways to Career Excellence Program Group 48, which began in 2024. For his second year in the PACE Program, he will be placed at Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan.
Why did you first apply to the PACE Program? Was it your first position with DLA?
It was a decision that took a lot of thought and consideration to where I ultimately wanted from my career as well as speaking with mentors and peers. To promote, but also to help build a bridge between the field and headquarters. And to help foster positive change as I move forward within Disposition Services.
What was your position before coming to the PACE Program?
I was an Environmental Protection Specialist most recently, coming over from the 1104 job series.
What have been your favorite parts of the PACE Program?
We are still new in the program currently, but I would say that the overviews are the most beneficial. Getting a more intimate understanding of how each directorate is involved with the everyday operations and overall mission of Disposition Services.
Do you have a favorite memory from your time in the program?
Yes, though we have only been onboard for a few months at this point, I’d say the RM Holiday party and PACE gift exchange were the best memories so far. The camaraderie, eating venue, cheer and laughter were some of the highlights.
If there was one thing that could’ve been different for you in the PACE program, what would it be?
The main would be pay and locality information prior to the start of the program, where to find it, and possibly approve a TDY rather than TCS/PCS for the majority of incoming participants.
What would you say is the most important quality to succeed in the PACE program?
To thoroughly review the provided handouts and instructions beforehand. This will enhance your preparedness for events and timelines.
In your own words, how would you describe the PACE program, and what can you gain from it?
For myself, this is a chance for me to gain a deeper understanding of leadership, by observing how leaders with diverse experiences and philosophies collaborate to achieve shared goals.
What background do you have? Do you have a lot of DLA experience, or were a recent grad, or did you come from another field?
I have a heavy military background (U.S. Navy), and I would say I am developing expertise within DLA. In the civilian world, I dealt with a lot of supply, service, and keeping inventory in the trucking industry.
Where are you assigned to next year? Where was it on your list (was it your top choice)?
I will remain here at Headquarters, Battle Creek for the duration of the program and taking my talents to the Operations Directorate. Yes, it was my first choice.
What your plans for your future in the agency? Do you hope to have a specific pathway/career field? Or a certain GS level?
My career progression will likely vary throughout my time with the agency, just as it has already. I’m eager to advance as far as my skills and the agency’s opportunities allow. My short-term goal is to achieve a GS-13 position.
Editorial Note: The Pathways to Career Excellence Program for DLA Disposition Services is a two-year program that takes PACER’s through all of Disposition Services and its processes to learn as much as possible about the directorate. The first year takes place at DLA Disposition Services Headquarters in Battle Creek, Michigan, and the second year either takes place in Battle Creek for Contracting PACER’s or at an assigned field site for Property Disposal PACER’s. PACERs begin as general schedule 7s, move to GS-9s at the end of their first year, and graduate the program as GS-11s. There are multiple pathways to becoming a PACER, including being hired internally, as a recent graduate, or from military service.
