BATTLE CREEK, Mich. –
The Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services provides a helping hand to many employees as they navigate a career trajectory for themselves. The agency’s reverse logistics major sub-command offers a diverse array of career choices in specialties like contracting, operations, and environmental regulation compliance.
Among the MSC’s many success stories is Sabrina Young, whose journey through the Pathways to Career Excellence program exemplifies the agency’s commitment to empowering talent and fostering fulfilling careers.
Young embarked on her PACE journey in late 2020, stepping into the role of a property disposal specialist with additional environmental duties. By 2022, she had successfully completed PACE, which set the stage for her current role as a management and program analyst in the Business Support division. Her career trajectory is a testament to her hard work and also to the supportive framework provided by DLA.
“I did know that when I made the decision to join DLA that I would grow and I would develop,” Young said, as she reflected on her initial decision to join the agency. “I was very excited. I did not come to the agency because I wanted just a job. I came here because I expected a career.”
This ambition is a driving force for many employees at DLA, where opportunities for advancement are regularly communicated and encouraged by leadership.
“One thing I really appreciated about my time at Anniston [Alabama] is that they always shared career opportunities and my leadership always encouraged me to apply,” Young said.
PACE was designed to provide participants with essential skills and experiences, including on-the-job training, branch rotations, and the ability to shadow senior leaders.
Jenny Norvey, who oversees the PACE program, emphasizes that participation in the program is just the beginning of a longer journey.
“This is only the first step in their journey with DLA, not the last step,” said Norvey. “The goal is for them to keep pushing themselves and keep developing.”
Young’s experience in PACE allowed her to explore many facets of DLA.
“I believe that this program gives you the push that you sometimes need, and not just to move forward but to move forward with purpose,” she said. “It’s an opportunity for you to have tools that you wouldn’t otherwise have. There are lessons that you can apply and help you to lead and grow.”
PACE also fosters a culture of collaboration. Participants are encouraged to reach out with questions, and they benefit from the camaraderie of their peers.
“There are certain things that you can’t replace, like the relationships that you build while in the program,” Young said. “It’s valuable knowing that you have people who are enthusiastic about your growth and willing to share their experiences to help that growth.”
Throughout her time at DLA, Young has taken on more strategic responsibilities, feeling better prepared and confident in her capabilities. Her journey is also fueled by a deep-seated passion for the mission of DLA, particularly her commitment to supporting the warfighter.
“One thing is true from 2017 and still true today, and that is I have a passion for the warfighter,” Young said. “Being prior service, I understand why our mission is essential and why it’s critical. That is my greatest motivation above all—knowing that we have military service members out there who are relying on us to do our very best.”
Young’s story is just one example of what PACE offers: a structured career path, an environment of support and growth, and a chance to contribute meaningfully to the mission of DLA. As she continues to evolve in her career, Young embodies the spirit of the agency—committed to excellence, dedicated to service, and driven by a profound sense of purpose.
