EMPLOYEE SPOTLIGHT: Ligia Perkins

By Mikia Muhammad DLA Troop Support Public Affairs

Organization: DLA Troop Support – Clothing and Textiles

Years of service: 7 years

What is your job, specifically? Inventory management specialist - materiel planner in the DLA Pathways to Career Excellence Program.

What do you like most about your job? There is always something happening. Things are always moving and changing, and I like that because it keeps me busy and I learn something every day.

Where do you see yourself in five years? I would like to be in a team lead position or on my way to it.

If you could speak directly to the warfighters you support, what would you say? Your selfless service means that my family and I, [and] all the citizens of this country get to enjoy unlimited freedom. Thank you for what you do to protect our country.

What is your favorite thing about working for Troop Support? My favorite thing is the feeling of paying it forward to the warfighter. Planning and fulfilling their needs is like a small token of appreciation for what they do. I served 7 years of active duty in the Army. I’ve been in their shoes, so I know what is like to be on the receiving end. It’s really an honor to be a part of this great team.

What is your fondest memory of working for Troop Support? I have not been in DLA long enough yet, but I would have to say it’s the fiscal year funding meetings of C&T because you get to see our senior management in action. It’s a real learning experience.

What’s the most thrilling/adventurous thing you have ever done? It was moving to New Jersey from San Antonio, Texas for a new job at Fort Dix, because I didn’t know anyone there.

Who is your personal hero and why? My father, he is the kindest and most loving person and [made me] the person I am now.

What was your first job? I worked at McDonald’s. I was a cook, a cashier, served the drive-thru, and even the kids’ birthday parties. You name it, I did it.

What advice would you give yourself of 10 years ago? Trust your intuition, it’s almost always right. “Almost” is the key word because you’ll make mistakes, but it’s the best advisor you have.

What is your proudest accomplishment in life thus far? It is my two kids. They are rotten to the core! You would think that they learn from me, but it turns out that I learn from them every day. They are amazing.

Who is the most important person in your life? My husband, he has been there for me and supported me through everything that life has brought me. No one else comes close.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? I think it is to have been selected for the PaCE program. Nothing else comes close.

What are your favorite television shows? “The Walking Dead.”
