Name: Oscar M. Moore, III

Organization: Customer Operations Directorate, DLA Aviation - Cherry Point, North Carolina.

What is your job title, and what do you do, specifically? I am a sustainment specialist. I perform sustainment analysis to ensure material is available when our customer, the Fleet Readiness Center East, needs it. This includes adjusting safety stock levels, requesting expedite or partial shipment of purchase orders, expedite award of purchase requests, and requesting manual relocation of material from another location. 

What do you like most about your job?  After retiring from the military with 25 years of service, what I like most about my job is supporting the warfighter. Additionally, I enjoy working with the planning and support team. Their knowledge and dedication makes me a better sustainment specialist every day. 

What kind(s) of training and education helps your work performance in your current role? The most beneficial training tool we have is each other. Our team meets weekly to discuss any sustainment issues or concerns and works together to help each other perform better.  Also, my recent completion of a Bachelor of Arts in logistics management has helped me numerous times along this journey.  

What would you say has been your major contributions to your organization this year in your job?
I am currently working on a continuous process improvement project for requisition alerts. Also, during my first few months with DLA Aviation - Cherry Point, I was part of a team that drafted a much needed local job aid to conduct daily duties as sustainment specialists.

If you could speak directly to the warfighters you support, what would you tell them?  Thank you for your hard work and dedication to support and defend our great country. God Bless.

What was your first job? My very first job was making pizzas at Pizza Hut in Atlanta, Georgia in 1989. I started my tenure with DLA Aviation - Cherry Point in 2015 as a supply intern.  During my internship, an opening for a permanent position came available which I applied for and was accepted. 

Where do you see yourself five years from now? Deeply rooted in DLA Aviation - Cherry Point and completing a master’s degree in logistics or human resources. 


What are some of your passions outside of work?

Family, physical fitness and nutrition. I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren making special memories and working at a local gym training people to meet their fitness goals.

If you could start your life over again, what would you do differently? The only change that I would make would be to spend more time with my kids when they were younger - in between deployments.  

What is your proudest accomplishment? My proudest accomplishment was to complete my Bachelor of Arts degree. I started my educational journey in 1994 and finally completed my degree this year with a 3.9 grade point average.

What is/are your favorite book(s), television show(s) or movie(s)? My favorite educational book is, “Who Moved My Cheese,” by Spencer Johnson - which is a quick-read related to adapting to change. I have been hooked on the TV series “Power,” and my all-time favorite movie is “Coolie High.”

What type of music do you most enjoy? Mostly 1990s rhythm and blues and rap.

Have you had a mentor that helped you grow in your career?  If so who, and how did they help? Marine Corps Maj. Gen. Craig Crenshaw was my mentor because he allowed me to grow as a leader by implementing an environment of success. He took the time to listen, was accessible and offered guidance if needed. He always exhibited true genuine concern for his staff and organization.
