Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna celebrates Fire Prevention Week

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

Recognizing the Fire Prevention Week Theme “Every Second Counts, Plan 2 Ways Out!” Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, planned a week of fun to teach employees and children critical fire prevention methods.

The week kicked off on Oct. 10 with an informational display in the DLA Distribution headquarters building where installation firefighters distributed educational materials outlining important elements in preparing for, and escaping, a fire.  Distributed items included tips such as:

  • Draw a map of your home by using a grid including all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.

  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.

  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.

  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.

  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

  • Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

The display then rotated throughout other high-occupancy buildings on the installation during the course of the week.

The week also featured fire prevention briefings to all Installation Support supervisors, as well as classroom informational sessions with the children of the Childcare Development Center.  The children’s sessions concluded with a fire truck visit from “Sparky the Fire Dog,” the official mascot of the National Fire Protection Association.

Additionally, installation Fire and Emergency Services personnel conducted its annual replacement of all smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries for housing residents during the week.
