DLA Distribution trains workforce on recognizing and responding to homemade explosives

In partnership with the U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Philadelphia Division, Harrisburg Field Office and the Pennsylvania State Police, Bureau of Emergency and Special Response, DLA Installation Operations Susquehanna, Security and Emergency Services provided no cost training on Improvised Explosive Devices to Defense Distribution Center, Susquehanna employees Jan. 25.

The training event, officially titled Homemade Explosives: Awareness, Recognition and Response, was conducted at DLA Distribution Headquarters in New Cumberland, Pennsylvania.  Attendees included installation employees, federal, state and local authorities, local first responders, and key community stakeholders.

Participants were provided awareness-level training on IEDs, including how to recognize and respond to them.  The training provided an overview on how powerful explosives can be made from common consumer goods that are bought and sold every day in communities across America.

Providing real-world examples of the dangers of an IED, the audience viewed short video clips from case studies and investigations conducted by the FBI and PSP, and participated in a facilitated discussion by the agents who conducted these investigations.

 “The underlying purpose of the training is to promote workforce resiliency to meet the installation’s goal of supporting the Warfighter while showcasing the installation’s strong partnerships with federal, state and local first responders,” said Tim Moore, Installation antiterrorism officer.

At the conclusion of the course, participants were better postured to assist in developing and implementing security-related processes with regard to identifying suspicious packages and behaviors within their respective work centers. 

This course was part one of a two-part training event with a second session scheduled for March to discuss homemade explosives.
