OGDEN, Utah, June 19, 2018 —
On May 30, 2018, DLA entities at Ogden, Utah held their first annual Voluntary Protection Program Safety Expo. The participants consisted of groups from Distribution, Aviation, Information Operations, Disposition Services, and Document Services to show many elements of safety affecting all aspects of employee lives, both personally and professionally.
The event had several exhibits addressing different learning opportunities such as ergonomics, crosswalk safety, a hot car demonstration, a hands-on forklift course, motorcycle and off-road awareness, and Personal Protection Equipment awareness training. Other exhibits focused on fall protection, hand tool safety, and health and wellness.
Karen Dry, DLA Distribution Safety Champion of the Year (2017) and chairperson for the coordination of the event said “The purpose of the event was to show that safety affects each of us in every aspect of our lives.”
A highlight of the event, the installation’s first responders displayed their equipment on site while answering questions and discussing everyone’s role in overall safety.
The event included food and games which provided entertainment while keeping the safety theme. Entertainment included Safety Bingo, bean bag toss where chances were earned by answering VPP-related questions, and forklift course showcasing driving skills. Participants were also able to earn water balloons, which were then thrown at volunteering supervisors in DLA’s own “Hydro-cage.”
James McArthur, DLA Distribution Hill director, commented that he was very pleased with the event and how well the event was attended, praising DLA employees for their deep commitment to each other’s safety.
The Safety Expo was another step forward in DLA’s commitment to support the warfighter. It is critical that the team remains safe as it is the foundation for those defenders of freedom the installation supports every day.
The group plans to host the event again next year.
