ANNISTON, Ala. –
Defense Logistics Agency Distribution Anniston, Alabama’s Douglas Hurtado was recently recognized as a Department of Defense Outstanding Employee with a Disability Award 2019 during DLA’s 52nd Annual Employee Recognition Program.
Hurtado, a packer in the Small Arms Parcel Shipping Branch, Weapons Division, has worked with DDAA for 27 years.
According to his award nomination, Hurtado’s work ethic and drive for excellence have made him an invaluable part of the Weapons Division, where he plays a primary role. In an area where 100% accuracy is required, Hurtado maintained accuracy and productivity standards throughout the entire year, packing 2,248 documents. Because of his attention to detail and expertise, his area did not receive a single discrepancy report for the year.
In addition to his everyday workload, he constantly assists others, ensuring the timely shipment of freight. With an attention to detail, and his ability to share his knowledge in a way that can be easily understood, Hurtado is called upon to train new Weapons Division personnel on how to follow processes and procedures.
“Hurtado built comradery within his team through his unique sense of humor and his natural competitiveness, which creates a desire for excellence in those around him,” said David Fansler, chief, Weapons Operations Division. “He made it a habit of assisting others, both superiors and peers, taking the time to train and teach new team members with a unique hands on approach, producing amazing results. Hurtado lives by the “Warfighter First!” mentality and anticipates problems and challenges before they happen – tackling them immediately.”
With a high work ethic, Hurtado leaves a positive effect on his co-workers. His work as an Alabama High School Athletic Association umpire and referee and a United States Deaf Basketball Official in multiple high school men and women’s sporting events earned the admiration of his co-workers, and created an environment of community involvement within the entire organization.
“We rely on his experience and knowledge, especially for special projects. Every day, in everything he does, Hurtado’s work ethic shines through, and he is more than an employee, he is a role model,” said Fansler.
“DLA Distribution had eight individual nominees and two teams selected for these prestigious awards,” said Perry Knight, chief of staff, DLA Distribution. “We are very proud of the outstanding contributions these employees have given to DLA, and am very grateful they are a part of our outstanding team.”
