From sand lot to diamond of Camp Carroll DLA Distribution Korea warehouse on track for February completion

By DLA Distribution Public Affairs

The new Defense Logistics Agency Distribution warehouse under construction at the U.S. Army Storage Facility on Camp Carroll, South Korea, is over 90% complete and on track for completion in February 2021.

Construction of the two-story, 250,000-square-foot warehouse began in March 2019 on a large vacant sand lot. Visible from a distance as you approach the installation, the state-of-the-art warehouse will include a 20,000-square-foot low level hazardous storage area and a 25,000-square-foot administrative area. The new facility replaces a 1960s era building and will be the most up-to-date building in DLA Distribution and on Camp Carroll.

“This project will not only boost the economic growth of the local community, but will also represent a significant cost savings for the U.S. Army,” said DLA Distribution Korea Commander Army Lt. Col. Corinne McClellan.

McClellan adds that excitement is mounting for the hardworking, innovative and seasoned DDDK workforce as they look forward to safely transitioning to the modern building, while maintaining a steady focus on audit readiness and warfighter support to the Korean Theater of Operations.

The $75 million Republic of Korea funded facility will be enhanced by DLA with $14 million of equipment, including a state-of-the-art automated material handling system to increase productivity, 25 foot high pallet rack storage system with material handling equipment to maximize the space of the facility, vertical lift modules to efficiently store bin material, new furniture designed for the administrative spaces and an electronic security system.

While the original 1960s era warehouse had two loading dock doors, the new warehouse will have 10, greatly increasing the ability for trucks to load and unload at the new facility. The modernized equipment will reduce costs, facility space requirements and receiving, storage and shipment times.

The building and interiors were designed to be certified as “Silver” by the Leadership in Energy and Environment Design Council. To earn the LEED Silver rating, the buildings feature energy-efficient lighting and equipment with motion and occupancy sensors, natural light, rainwater harvesting, recycled and local materials, green roofs, photovoltaic roof panels, maximized solar orientation and increased levels of insulation.

The newly modernized warehouse is critical for DLA Distribution to continue to fulfill mission requirements to provide faster, more efficient and more economical service to the U.S. armed forces in the Korean peninsula operations. DDDK executes a diverse range of missions in support of service component customers including joint theater distribution, multi-stop direct delivery, cross-dock, in bound/out bound surface containers, total delivery service and retrograde. The distribution center provides transportation protective service to the 7th Air Force through the escort of sensitive items.
