FORT BELVOIR, Va. –
Defense Logistics Agency employees in the national capital region are almost halfway toward reaching their 2020 Combined Federal Campaign goal of $260,000. By Nov. 30, employees had pledged almost $121,000 with seven weeks remaining in what is known as the world’s largest, most successful workplace charity campaign.
“I’m continually impressed by the enthusiasm, energy and creativity of our campaign volunteers, from the core team in DLA Finance to all of our coordinators and keyworkers. Though the virtual environment we’re in presents some challenges, we’ve found new ways of generating support,” said DLA Campaign Manager Gordon Weiss.
DLA Energy, which is leading donations with $23,893 in contributions, sponsored a virtual “Race for Relief” 5K run/walk the week of Nov. 16 to highlight charities focused on children and family services. Other DLA directorates are sponsoring causes of the week like environmental protection and human rights to generate support.
DLA Logistics Operations and the director’s staff closely follow DLA Energy’s contributions with $21,340 and $21,216 respectively.
DLA employees in the region donated over $274,000 of $34 million in local contributions during the 2019 campaign. An additional $1 million was raised through the special solicitation in spring to help charities serving those in need during the pandemic.
Becky Polansky, DLA Human Resources’ customer account manager for DLA Headquarters and DLA Energy, said she uses the CFC to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Polansky’s granddaughter Cadence was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 5, and her family endured many sleepless nights continually checking Cadence’s blood sugar levels and worrying about what-ifs. Thanks to studies conducted by organizations like the JDRF, Cadence, who turned 13 in November, now wears a continuous glucose monitor that eliminates frequent needle pricks.
“The technology has changed our lives, especially Cadence’s,” Polansky said. “It’s made life so much easier for her. This is why I give.”
CFC coordinators and keyworkers assigned to every directorate will continue reaching out to employees through Jan. 15 to encourage participation and offer help placing donations, Weiss said.
Donors can choose from over 20,000 nonprofit charitable organizations that support causes ranging from homeless veterans and endangered species to cancer. Since it began in 1961, federal employees have raised over $8.4 billion.
Employees can donate by credit card or payroll deduction on a one-time or reoccurring basis at GiveCFC.org or the CFC Giving Mobile App on their Apple or Android cell phone. Both options are secure and allow users to search for specific charities or view a list of organizations that support specific categories in their choice of geographic locations. Employees can also donate volunteer hours rather than money by selecting a charity with a hand icon next to it.
