Employee pay is set by the servicing personnel office upon appointment to a position. There are three basic pay systems covering employees: the General Schedule (GS); the Federal Wage System (FWS); and Senior Executive Services (SES). Pay setting rules and other pay administrations topics are defined by the law (title 5, United States Code); regulations (Part 5, Code of Federal Regulations); and other guidance issued by DoD and DLA.

DLA establishes and administers hours of duty for their employees in accordance with law, regulations and guidance provided by the Office of Personnel Management and the Department of Defense, and negotiated labor agreements, if applicable. Full-time employees work 80 hours a pay period which covers 14 days.
Alternative work schedules (AWS) are non-traditional schedules available to employees instead of traditional fixed work schedules (e.g., Monday through Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week). There are of two types of AWS: (1) flexible work schedules (FWS), and (2) compressed work schedules (CWS). Each type schedule is treated differently for holidays, work-related travel and overtime purposes. AWS are agreements between the employee and their supervisor.
Flexible work schedules refer to a variety of scheduling arrangements in which fixed times of arrival and departure are replaced by a workday or workweek composed of two different types of time--core time and flexible time. Core time is the designated periods during which all employees must be present. Flexible time is designated as part of the schedule of working hours within which employees may choose their time of arrival and departure from the office, within limits consistent with the duties and requirements of their position.
Compressed work schedules, which may take a variety of forms, require full-time employees to work 80 hours in less than 10 days in a pay period. Also, the times of arrival at and departure from the office are regular and fixed under a compressed schedule.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
The EAP brings together a variety of services both work-related and personal under one roof. The EAP is a confidential counseling and referral service available to all employees and their immediate family members. Your EAP provides telephone consultations, problem assessments, short-term counseling, referral if necessary and twenty-four hour coverage at no cost to the employee.

Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)
The Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) is a retirement savings and investment plan for Federal employees and members of the uniformed services and offers the same types of savings and tax benefits that many private corporations offer their employees under 401(k) plans.
The TSP is a defined contribution plan, meaning that the retirement income you receive from your TSP account will depend on how much you (and your agency, if you are eligible to receive agency contributions) put into your account during your working years and the earnings accumulated over that time.

Training and Professional Growth and Development Opportunities
DLA offers a variety of opportunities to advance in a career field, or develop new skills to enhance performance. Several programs are also available for individuals who become new supervisors, as well as developmental opportunities for executives.
Some career fields require certification, such as Acquisition, Logistics, and Information Awareness. DLA offers the resources to achieve these certifications either through a school-type environment or online courses, which can be taken at an individual’s own pace. DLA is launching a career mapping program which charts requirements for career progression for a variety of occupations. Currently, the career guide is for mission critical occupations, but will expand for all major career fields.
Other types of training are also offered to help the employee’s performance such as effective writing, preparing effective presentations, public speaking, optimizing your skills with software and Myers–Briggs to name a few.
Employees, and their supervisors, mutually agree to create an Individual Development Plan which records employee training and development. All training initiatives are maintained in the Learning Management System, which offers a catalog of training opportunities, and records an employee’s training history.
Additional coursework or seminars are offered to explain benefits, such as long-term care insurance, thrift savings plan, mid–career retirement planning and pre-retirement planning, and even an overview of morale, welfare and recreation programs and services available to all federal employees.
Training and development opportunities are also available through on-the-job training, rotation assignments and the mentoring program.
