FORT BELVOIR, Virginia, June 26, 2020 —
Defense Logistics Agency Energy Commander Air Force Brig. Gen. Jimmy Canlas introduced himself and shared his leadership principles with employees in a video town hall recorded June 24.
Canlas assumed command of DLA Energy June 23.
“I wanted to have my first Town Hall so you can learn a little bit about me,” he said. “As we develop this relationship with each other, I'll have an opportunity to hear what is on your minds.”
DLA operations and personnel at the McNamara Headquarters Complex on Fort Belvoir, Virginia, have been under a maximum telework situation since April 1 because of the Coronavirus virus.

Describing his family as “treasures,” Canlas highlighted the importance of his wife, Joy, and his children, Jonah and Malea.
“When I took command there is something else that grew, a larger family called DLA Energy,” he said. “I have my primary family, but now I have my extended family.”
Canlas shared his professional priorities, stressing the importance of developing exceptional leaders, logistics excellence, being agile and adaptable and creating an environment of dignity and respect.
“Growing the next generation, this is so important,” Canlas said. “We need to be able to develop the next generation of leaders to rise up to take our place. When we invest into our people, they're going to take care of the mission.”
He vowed, as commander, to provide training opportunities and the tools needed to eliminate obstacles so employees can reach their full potential.
Canlas’s expectations is for the workforce to give it their all each and every day.
“I'm expecting you to make mistakes, because we all make mistakes, and that's a good thing as long as we learn from them,” he said. “I'm not going to punish anyone for making a mistake. I will punish those who commit crimes. There is a difference between mistakes and crimes.”
Cultivating a climate of dignity and respect is an integral part of Canlas’ leadership philosophy.
“With everything that's going on with the unrest across our country, everyone should have that feeling of inclusiveness,” Canlas said. “They should feel safe, free from harassment whether it's based on their gender, sexual orientation, religious background or the color of their skin.”
The general promised the Energy workforce he would give it his all each and every day.
“You can expect me to make mistakes, learn and keep charging,” he said. “I want to eliminate obstacles and get to yes if it is the right thing to do.”
