Memorial Day
Army Brig. Gen. Gail Atkins greets Angelique Kidd Smith and spouse Alan Smith, both of Bexley, immediately following the city’s Memorial Day ceremony May 29. Atkins, commander of the Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime and Defense Supply Center Columbus, was the event’s keynote speaker. Angelique is the daughter of the late Admiral Isaac Campbell Kidd, Jr., who served as NATO’s supreme allied commander in the Atlantic and commander-in-chief of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet from 1975-1978. Angelique’s grandfather, Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd, was senior officer on board the battleship U.S.S. Arizona when it was attacked and sunk during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As commander, Kidd went to the bridge, taking charge until the ship was hit and sunk. He and much of his crew were killed. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor.
