Dry Dock 1 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, stands ready to accept a ship for repair before the Japanese attack Dec. 7, 1941. Navy Vice Adm. Joseph M. Lyle remained at Pearl Harbor for much of World War II, overseeing repairs for vessels damaged in the attack, as well as at Coral Sea, Midway and Guadalcanal. Lyle’s efforts ensured the Navy faced the Japanese with as many ships as possible.
