An elephant delivers fuel Feb. 15, 1945, to a C-46 transport plane preparing to fly supplies from eastern India to China by traversing the Himalayan mountains, a route affectionally known as “the Hump.” Army Lt. Gen. Woodrow W. Vaughn spent World War II in the China-Burma-India theater, rising from second lieutenant at the conflict’s beginning to a colonel soon after it ended.
